So I've spent quite a lot of time playing NFSU2 for the last 2 months and I found something that I have never noticed before. We all know about the so-called "Ghost city" map which has the central tunnel accessible, right? Well what if I told you that there are more differences about this map when you compare it with the normal map that has the tunnel locked? No, I'm not talking about the problems with the disappearing scenery - this is something truly new.
I usually play this game with all of the special effects disabled, it looks cleaner and more realistic to me that way. However, I decided to play the game with highest graphics during the last career playthrough and I decided to swap the normal map with the ghost map when I did the magazine time trials for each stage - the central tunnel came in handy when I was doing the magazines that require you to drive from Coal Harbor to Beacon Hill/Heights or vice versa. While doing those time trials though, when driving during rainy weather, I noticed that the game looks much different compared to before when I played the races with the normal map.
So I forced rainy weather in the Extra Options script, launched the game, went to free roam and took the left screenshot. Then I went back to the main menu, switched back to Windows and replaced the normal map with the ghost map in the game directory. Went back to the game, went to free roam and took the right screenshot:
The difference is obvious: when using the ghost map, the game has some sort of cyanish overlay when it rains.
Another comparison with Dragozool texture mod loaded:
If you disable Tinting or Particle System the overlay goes away. I never noticed this before, even though I used to play the game on max graphics when I bought the laptop because back then I liked the effects more. Is it because the ghost map is normally loaded only when you play 3 of the drag tracks (Tunnel Construction, North Freeway and Airport Freeway) and it never seems to rain when you race at those tracks unless you force the rain in Extra Options? What do you think about this?
